Afternoon tea lovers will love these Smoked Salmon Tea Sandwiches! They’re made with fresh herbs, cream cheese, and a citrusy secret ingredient. Enjoy them with a cup of English tea and scones, and serve them at your next tea party.

Nothing is more classic than smoked salmon tea sandwiches served at afternoon tea. The rich, creamy filling with the smokiness of the salmon and fresh herbs pair perfectly with English tea and scones.
We like to add a splash of yuzu juice into the filling because of its unique citrusy flavor, and whole wheat bread really ties it all together. For a complete assortment of tea sandwiches, we recommend our BAT Sandwich and our Creamy Cucumber Salad which doubles as a really good filling for tea sandwiches!

Ingredient Notes
The full list of ingredients and their quantities is in the recipe card below. Here you’ll find notes on specific ingredients as well as any substitutions.
- Smoked Salmon: We use Norwegian salmon.
- Capers: For saltiness and flavor.
- Fresh Herbs: Fresh dill and chives are classic pairings for smoked salmon.
- Cream Cheese: We use block cream cheese which you can use straight out of the fridge. No need to soften it beforehand.
- Yuzu Juice: It has a very unique flavor, like a cross between a lemon, grapefruit, lime, and even an orange. You can find it in bottle form at well-stocked grocery stores. If not, you can use lemon juice instead.
- Thin Sandwich Bread: Tea sandwiches are naturally more delicate, so thinly sliced bread is best. We like using Dave’s Killer Bread for this recipe.
Step-by-Step Instructions
This section provides a general overview as well as any pictures to guide you through the recipe. The full detailed recipe instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

STEP 1: Make the filling. Combine the herbs, yuzu juice, and pepper with the cream cheese then add the chopped smoked salmon.
STEP 2: Assemble the sandwiches. Make four sandwiches with the filling and cut off the crusts using a sharp knife. Slice the sandwiches into triangles or rectangles to create small tea sandwiches.
Expert Tips
- Use a sharp knife. It makes cleaner cuts and prevents the filling from coming out when slicing the sandwiches.
- Leave a small gap along the edges of the bread. You’ll be cutting the crusts off so try to leave a small border when making the sandwiches. That way you don’t lose too much filling.
FAQ
Yes. You can make it the night before and keep it covered in the fridge until you’re ready to use it.
Tea sandwiches are typically served as part of afternoon tea alongside English scones and tiny tea cakes/other small desserts. However, you can eat these just like any other sandwich with a side of chips. Just don’t forget the tea!
