Rich, velvety Hojicha Hot Chocolate made with roasted green tea powder and chopped dark chocolate. It’s cozy, decadent, and warms you up when you need it most.

This Hojicha Hot Chocolate is a slightly revised version of our Earl Grey Hot Chocolate. It’s just as rich and velvety, but with a different flavor profile from the hojicha powder.
If you’ve never had hojicha before, it usually comes in leaf and powder form. For this recipe, we’re using the powder version which is used the same way as matcha. Unlike matcha though, hojicha tastes like a chocolatey roasted green tea which is why it pairs perfectly with chocolate.
This is a great drink to enjoy on a brisk, snowy day by the fire or when it’s a bit chilly outside. You can add whatever toppings you like to make it your own. We usually drink it by itself, but sometimes opt for a classic whipped cream topping with chocolate shavings if we’re feeling extra indulgent.

Ingredient Notes
Find the full list of ingredients, measurements, and instructions in the recipe card below!
- Hojicha Powder: This roasted green tea powder is similar to matcha, but with a roasted, almost chocolatey flavor. We use Ocha & Co hojicha powder.
- Whole Milk: You can try it with plant-based milk, but we recommend using a barista blend. Creamy oat milk is probably the best alternative.
- Dutch-Processed Cocoa Powder + 70% Dark Chocolate: We like to use both to create an ultra-rich, deep chocolatey drink.
- Maple Syrup: You can also use the same amount of brown sugar to sweeten your hot chocolate.
Step-by-Step Instructions
This section provides a general overview as well as any pictures to guide you through the recipe. The full detailed recipe instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
1. Heat the hot chocolate on the stove. Add the milk, hojicha powder, cocoa powder, and salt to a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer then reduce the heat and whisk in the dark chocolate and maple syrup.
2. Aerate the hot chocolate. Use a handheld milk frother to mix the drink until bubbly. Then pour into two mugs and enjoy!
Expert Tip
Use high-quality dark chocolate. Since this is a key part of the drink, be sure to use a chocolate that you enjoy. Our favorites are Guittard and Valrhona Guanaja feves.
Toppings for Hojicha Hot Chocolate
Dress up your hojicha hot chocolate however you like. Here are few ideas for what to top yours with:
- Whipped cream: For a simple sweet whipped cream, use a handheld milk frother to whisk together ¼ cup (60 ml) of heavy cream with ½ tbsp of powdered sugar until soft peaks form.
- Chocolate Shavings: Place your chocolate in the freezer beforehand for easier grating/shaving.
- A dusting of hojicha powder: Use a fine mesh sieve to dust of bit of hojicha powder on top. You can also use cocoa powder.
- Toasted marshmallows: This would taste amazing with the toasty flavors of the hojicha!

📖 Recipe
Hojicha Hot Chocolate
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups (350 ml) whole milk
- 1 tbsp hojicha powder sifted
- 1 tsp Dutch-processed cocoa powder sifted
- ⅛ tsp fine sea salt
- 3 oz (85 g) high-quality 70% dark chocolate roughly chopped
- 1 tbsp maple syrup plus more to taste
Instructions
- To a small saucepan, add the milk, sifted hojicha powder, cocoa powder, and salt. Place over medium heat and whisk to combine. Bring to a simmer.
- Once simmering, reduce to low heat and add the dark chocolate and maple syrup. Whisk until smooth and lightly thickened then turn off the heat.
- Use a handheld milk frother to aerate the hot chocolate until bubbly.
- Pour into two mugs and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings if desired.
Notes
- The hot chocolate is slightly on the bitter side, so if you like yours sweeter you can always add more maple syrup. It does tend to taste sweeter as it cools so just keep that in mind.
